Today, I'll be attending my family's Christmas. And there will be a young man there who is currently dating my niece.
He's a full blown Trump supporter and I'll be treating him as an equal on this day.
It is hard. But, just the other day, I was blessed with an epiphany. One of my next door neighbor's, I recently discovered was a Trump supporter. I drove by their house one day and saw a Trump sign in their garage.
But yesterday, that family happened upon my doorstep. Just to say "Merry Christmas" and give us a box of homemade cookies. We had just met them the day before and, through the spirit of Christmas, they were generous to a stranger.
Who's to say what would have happened if I were a minority? We'll never know.
But today, like the soldiers in WW2, I'll be laying down my arms in the interest of humanity and kindness, just like the Christmas spirit, and I will be gracious.
Merry Christmas DU.

(12,022 posts)But others -- like the "Christian" who said she hoped I have the worst Christmas ever just because I support the Rockettes who don't want to dance for Trump -- just can't be civil back.
Btw I responded by wishing her a joyous Christmas.

(8,203 posts)Just as a gift of cookies makes it easier to be friends with Trump supporters, so too will your graciousness help this young man not dismiss Democrats as the enemy.
Merry Christmas! I hope many follow your example.

(58,724 posts)Being kind to those with whom you disagree is a virtue, in my opinion.
graciousness is a virtue, but they're still beneath contempt. Like those nice, regular folks who voted for the National Socialist Workers Party in 1930's Germany. A fatal mistake. Lets hope this one isn't as fatal, but my opinion of them stays the same. There are just some things you can't gloss over in good conscience, no matter how virtuous it might seem.

(603 posts)Luckily none of my significant others or immediate family members voted for Orange Carbuncle. On the other hand, first and second cousins, and a couple of aunts and uncles love the idiot and were proud and vocal about their support. My wife and I have declined two invitations to holiday parties where this group will be in attendance because we all love talking politics and I fear I will become quite aggressive and confrontational (not my usual laid back demeanor) in regards to their votes and opinions. As usual I would come with facts and they would come with Fox News talking points. My nerves are still too raw. Contempt? Hell yes!

In my head I'll calmly tell her what I think of that orange faced, autocratic, pussy-grabbing, putin lover, but who knows?
