When the mob of racist assholes showed up to take the wrongly accused black man out to lynch him, They found Atticus sitting on a chair outside of the jail.
They were armed, but Atticus had only a law book he was studying while he stood guard for his client, along with the knowledge that he was in the right. He stood down the crowd of angry racist men through the strength of his will and some applied reason and psychology. His daughter, Scout, too, showed up and helped to shame the men.
When they come for our neighbors, will we show the same sort of strength? I want to think so. I'm not sure I'll stand there armed with just a lawbook. I'm more likely to be holding a pump action shotgun at port arms. However, I will use the same knowledge that I am in the right, along with whatever reason I can muster. I hope others will stand with me against the mob. I hope so. I'm far from certain they will be there, though.
All of us may have to decide questions like this, in our neighborhoods and our cities. Maybe on our own blocks. How we will respond will be the measure of our will and our dedication to others' rights to the same freedoms we all hold. Will we be there? I'm planning to be. I'm planning to help protect my neighbors and fellow citizens if random people come for them in that way. Think about how you will respond in advance, because you may be in such a situation before you know it.
Thank you for reading.
