The NYT explains the pressures being brought to bear. The Rockettes are seasonal workers who have to comply/fight to keep their jobs.

Wouldn't it be great if those dancers who were pressured to perform "messed up" and let the shoes fly off their feet as they kicked, with bonus points based on who in the audience they hit?
