I give it 90 days, tops, and that might be optimistic.

(12,667 posts)More likely Putin will tell Trump to stand down while he re-takes the Baltics and most of eastern Europe under the guise of helping the "Russian Natives" that the old Soviet state moved into those regions back in the day. Russia doesn't have enough troops for an all-out shooting war, so these countries will drop through internal strife.
As for Turkey, Erdogan is a useful fool to him, anyway - a buffer between Russia and the Gulf States. The ambassador was probably a surprise, but he can use it to his advantage.
We'll still probably be sending troops into little proxy fights Putin allows us to get into for oil or other resources. But he's got to save our military in reserve if there's going to be shooting war with China within the next 5 years.
Just looking at the strategic ramifications here. Attacking Turkey is not in Putin's interest.
However, letting countries in the Middle East and Africa continue to cripple themselves with inter-tribal warfare does work to Russia's interest. That destabilizes all the former colonial nations refugees will be fleeing to, as well as investors and businesses in those countries. (And it keeps a thumb in the eye of the Gulf Nations who are trying to screw with Russia economically)

(22,976 posts)And there will be a LOT of dissent. It took BushCo just 9 months to take care of their popular-vote loss.
Hate to say it, but some serious shit is headed our way.

YES: Americans are that stupid!

(12,667 posts)Home grown terrorism with mass casualties blamed on "immigrants" or some other marginalized group. Excuse to set up a watch list, round up masses of people for the slightest suspicion, and start internment camps. They'll be more comfortable than Manzinar, but not by much, because, tax breaks or something.
Of course, that won't include any random Planned Parenthood bombing, Mosque or Temple bombing, or attack on any "Liberal" target - because that's just the good old Trumpatriots doing the right thing - Making Amerikkka White Again, like some of their Founders wanted it to be.
And there will again be some Strange Fruit...

But, I'll caveat that they will be quick and short like Grenada, so he can claim how awesome he is. He knows getting bogged down in the mid-east will be unpopular in the long run. He'll play chicken to some extent with China because of the need for a boogey man.
Basically any war will serve his business empire. I'm thinking if you are a small Asian or south east Asian island nation that has refused a Trump hotel or golf course, I weep for you.

(7,637 posts)China already said that they have restrained themselves so far because Trump is not yet president. The drone thing was probably a warning shot across the bow which totally went missed by Trump. Once he is president, if he disses them they will retaliate with an incident.
The delicate balance of the one china policy is being broken. China might decide that with Trump president they can invade Taiwan militarily and be willing to take the heat and call Trump's bluff.
