Scenario:
1. President Trump bashes a company on Twitter.
2. Stock of the company goes down.
3. Somebody affiliated with Trump buys.
4. Stock reverts to normal.
5. This somebody affiliated with Trump sells.
6. Profit.
Is that insider-trading?
Always remember: They got Al Capone for tax-evasion...

(11,843 posts)If someone shorts the stock before Trump bashes them, that could be illegal. It's the knowing ahead of time that is the illegal part. Investing in a company before Trump praises a company could also be illegal.
But buying a distressed stock and profiting off a recovery is something that anyone can do with public knowledge.

But it's not insider trading.
