General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI get pissed when people in Europe critiicize this country.
It seems to be very fashionable to criticize everything American. Sure--we've done alot of stupid things, but so have they. Brexit, anyone?
I don't think it's necesssary to state the obvious, either. Sure, we elected a disaster. Yes, it will affect the world. We actually know this and don't have to be told over and over again.
Rant over.

(6,409 posts)The US often tries to dictate to other countries. Think George W Bush and his behavior in the wake of 9-11.

(63,881 posts)they did it before when Bush was re-elected again. You don't expect we will be praised for this?
We got knocked off the world stage. Just venting

(63,221 posts)You can bitch about them all you want, but when someone outside of the family does it -- well, that is just not acceptable. I have plenty of complaints about the US, but I understand you. My defenses go up when people outside our country start attacking us, even though they may be right.

(6,122 posts)We can criticize this country, and we do. Our outrage is passionate and far exceeds the anger of other countries. That's because we love it and even get all corny about it. But when someone from the outside criticizes, it just rubs me the wrong way. I don't care if they're right. We know about the stupid things we do and how screwed up our political system is. Home is home.

(4,423 posts)that most Western Europeans admire us greatly.
They don't like seeing us make missteps such as this (gigantic) one.

(68,868 posts)The less we are respected internationally, the quicker maybe just maybe some of our dimmer bulbs will realize Trump pissed away our greatness rather than restoring it.
Europeans can bash away to their heart's content if they want, since they're right.
Personally I will have zero national pride, or feeling of patriotism, for the next 4 years. America is not great, it's not even good.
I'm a New Yorker, but an American only in the legal sense.

It's worthwhile to recognize when certain trends are impacting countries globally, such as the rightwing, nationalistic, and fear mongering that led to Brexit and Trump.
It's also important for countries to examine issues such as other countries hacking elections, for example Germans pointing to what happened here with Trump and pointing out that their legislature was hacked and they need to take this seriously given the example of what happened here.
Policies don't stop at borders. Knowledge and opinions don't, either

But the U.S. has been pretty brutal worldwide for awhile now. Jesus, just Trump alone is hateworthy.

I don't mind if Europeans or other foreigners think badly of the US or Americans - they're entitled to their opinion. What I don't like is when Americans are all worried about what the Euros think of us.
