Pre-FDR?
Newt Gingrich stated yesterday that the GOP would like to dismantle every bit of FDR's New Deal.
What would happen if they were successful?
At the time of FDR, there were a lot of rural areas with farms. People could grow a lot of their food. That is not relevant to todays society. People do not have the same type of survival skills.
What would happen if they stopped the food stamp program?
What would happen if they did away with the Medicare program for the elderly?
What would happen if they were to do away with Social Security altogether?
After all, they had none of those programs during FDR's era.
Many people would be deprived of their means to survive. Charitable organizations would be flooded and could not handle the demand. Old people would get sick and die, without Medicare, because they could not afford to see a doctor. Without Social Security, they could not pay their rent or utility bills.
The homeless problem would be epidemic. Crime and violence would be uncontrollable. The problems would be unmanageable. The market and big business could not supply the jobs or the means to help people enough to make much of a difference. Without the safety nets created by FDR and the Democrats, it would be a very tough life for most of the people in our country.
