(111,110 posts)I have no idea how this is going to turn out? I don't have a good feeling about it.

(73,626 posts)I talk to feel the same way. I don't. I'm feeling positive about the future. While the Trump presidency is a cancerous growth on America, it's good that people are aware of the symptoms. That provides us an opportunity to combat the disease.

(111,110 posts)I might feel better about it?
Yet, when we clearly identify that insanity, it can provide a road-marker, guiding us in a different direction.
I'll be back this afternoon. Seeking medical attention for the second head injury in three weeks. Perhaps that explains my optimism?

(111,110 posts)I appreciate your optimism.

(73,626 posts)to an editor of a local paper. She does not share my optimism. I said that these times were best summed up by Lennon and McCartney: Paul sang, "It's getting better all the time," and John then adds, "Can't get much worse."

(12,875 posts)My natural optimism was shattered, and attempts to put the pieces back together have been thwarted with every Trump nominee antithetical to the mission of the agency or department they will head. Real damage will be done to the environment and to vulnerable human beings, some of it irreversible.
It is a national shame and embarrassment that Donald Effing Trump won the electoral votes of a single state, let alone enough to propel this unfit narcissistic demagogue to the most powerful political office on the planet. With all the media coverage he received throughout the campaign it should have been obvious to anyone with a functioning frontal lobe that the sum total as well as the details of his spoken and tweeted words reveal Donald Trump to be a pathological liar and a con man who doesn't giving a flying rats ass about the poor dupes who voted for him.
Thanksgiving at my house was a small and pleasant affair with my wife, her daughter & husband with four grandkids. The Christmas Eve party at my sister's house will be a much larger affair, including cousins with whom I've had longstanding good relationships -- and they voted for Trump. My sister had to shut down her facebook account for fear that expressing herself politically would destroy relationships with relatives and friends. I am not on facebook, but I'm really struggling with how I will handle the political discussions that will inevitably arise at the upcoming gathering. If I speak my mind, I will say very hurtful things to people I care about.
I'm trying not to feed the wolf of my simmering rage, but he calls me to his den every time I read the newspaper.
H2O Man, I value your wisdom. Have you any guidance?

(73,626 posts)I know that I don't have "the" answer. But I know that the best answers are usually found when people put their minds together ....using what the Haudenosaunee refer to as the Good Mind. And in times not unlike today, excepting the technological advances, and pollution, but in terms of hostility, rage, and fear dominating the larger society, what may start as a small group -- or scattered small groups -- can change those negative dynamics.
I've been thinking about your question, and apologize for not getting back earlier. Maybe I'll write something up on that topic.
Peace,
Pat

(12,875 posts)In the days since I wrote my post to you, I've made some progress coming to grips with the situation and with myself. I started this thread in DU today, and the best thing about it is not the OP itself or the recs that boosted it to (currently) #4 on the Greatest page, but the reprimand in post #11 and the conversation that ensued.

(34,582 posts)The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater. We are almost there.
