I won't recount the whole sordid story of my murdered Mayday tree, but for those of you who wanted to see how the tree company and the utility made it right for us, here's the final result. They spared no expense here -- an excavator to pull out the old trunk, topsoil and the four trees ($130 a piece), the landscaping crew, and grass seeding for the neighbors. Three of the four trees have buds, so we should have sweet-smelling lilacs by mid-July. I've planted some lupines, columbines and forget-me-nots in the bare ground, and I'm sure the garden will overtake this fresh dirt. It should be pretty beautiful by the end of summer.
Much thanks to all of you who saw me through this mini-crisis. I know it's not earth-shattering news, but for once, justice was served.

(28,478 posts)Is that along the right side of your driveway looking at the house? I'm trying to picture where this is; I thought the tree in question was on the left side of the drive?
...really just asking for more photos!

(46,436 posts)Did we have our driveway paved when you were here? I can't remember.
I might have posted some pictures before of the tree looking toward the street, in which case it would have been on the left. Maybe that's the confusion.

I'm glad they spared no expense to make it right.
Enjoy your beautiful new trees!

Yes, it is not your first tree, but it is not only beautiful, it will become more and more beautiful with time.

(81,322 posts)I missed the "prequel" to this, but it sounds like this replacement operation, while it couldn't possibly be identical to the lost tree, will pay MANY dividends. Lilacs by mid-July?! Heavenly!!! Sounds like you may already be a winner!!!
