E.g. if you vote with the republicans to repeal the ACA or to cut medicare/social security then not only should the national party not support your re-election bid, but they should be actively recruiting people to primary you.

52-48 Senate split.

Manchin is one of us. Not exactly like us, but one for our side.

He is not irredeemable. He just stuck his thumb in the Republican eye over miner health issues!

53-47 is not better.

regain a Senate majority. I bet folks are going to want Manchin to caucus with us then if he's the deciding vote.

He's a Dem from WV, not CA or NY. At points during the Trump administration, he's going to have to actually be representative of the Dems of WV if he wants to stay in office. His job is to please the voters of WV, who are a bit more conservative than a Dem that you would find in CA or NY.

privatizing Medicare and SS?

Giant tax breaks for the Rich?

Repealing Obamacare?

Confirming corporate assholes with ties to Russia to the cabinet?

Which issues that Trump has put forward do you want him to support?

I expect Manchin and his team know better what sells to voters in WV than either of us. The republicans have a majority and there will be few instances in which he is ever the deciding vote on whether it passes or not so for many things, I simply don't care if he has to cast a symbolic vote to keep the Dem's numbers up in the Senate. I'd rather retake the Senate with some extra safe votes before casting folks out of our caucus.

It simply makes sense. I'm sure Manchin will support numerous Trump and Republican moves with respect to the EPA.

just said Manchin did us a favor staying in the Senate - and wanting to run again.

A 60-40 split in 2018 could be an extinction-level-event as things stand now.

Underground victories tend to be smallish.
