The Rocky Road to Universal Healthcare in Indonesia

Jaminan Kesehatan National (JKN) – praised in ideation, criticised in implementation – has a long way to go to provide universal healthcare for all Indonesians.

Jakarta, GIVnews.com – A universal healthcare system is aimed to provide all citizens with the right to healthcare regardless of their financial status. As long as the citizen is registered in the region that is being covered, he/she will get the privilege of obtaining the universal healthcare coverage which is coordinated by the region representatives.

Indonesia is one of the countries with a universal healthcare system. The nation has a healthcare insurance called Jaminan Kesehatan National (JKN) which was launched in January 2014 by a local social security and healthcare agency, Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Sosial Kesehatan (BPJS). The health insurance system is established in hopes to improve Indonesia’s healthcare and help those who find it difficult to get a better medical services due to their financial situation.

The government intends to cover the basic healthcare for all Indonesian citizens under the JKN by 2019. As of November 2016, Ministry of Health official website shows that approximately 68% of Indonesians have registered for the healthcare coverage.

The JKN received its share of criticisms as well. Studies from the Gadjah Mada University Center for Health and the Paramadina Graduate School of Diplomacy stated that the government’s goal to make all Indonesians use the JKN by 2019 will be not possible.
