Boeing played down and questioned remarks by Donald Trump after the President-elect blasted the costs of the Air Force One 747 replacement program, saying it it should be cancelled.
Speaking to reporters outside one of his hotels after a morning tweet suggesting the program should be axed, Trump went further than alleging the cost of the airplanes was going to be $4 billion.
"I think its ridiculous. I think Boeing is doing a little bit of a number. We want Boeing to make a lot of money, but not that much money, Trump told reporters.
In a carefully worded and terse email response, Boeing (NYSE: BA) said it doesn't actually have a finalized order for the two 747 aircraft as Trump appeared to suggest.
Rather, the Chicago-based jet maker said that its currently under contract for only $170 million with the U.S. government "to help determine the capabilities of these complex military aircraft that serve the unique requirements of the President of the United States."
No firm order for the jets has been finalized, Boeing spokesman Todd Blecher confirmed to The Puget Sound Business Journal.
"We look forward to working with the U.S. Air Force on subsequent phases of the program allowing us to deliver the best planes for the President at the best value for the American taxpayer," Blecher added.
