Guam Sen. Rodriguez Jr. proposes plan to partially privatize Medicaid and MIP
Guam - About 15 thousand under-insured residents could see their healthcare expanded under a new proposed public private partnership by senator Dennis Rodriguez Jr.
The current chairman on the committee on health proposes to incentivize private insurance companies to take on uninsured, low income island residents, thereby increasing access to healthcare for a vulnerable part of Guam’s population. Essentially, Rodriguez wants to partially privatize Medicaid and the medically indigent program on Guam.
"We are looking at it being managed by the private and local companies on Guam. It would be a Medicaid program that would be managed by the private sector and it’s no different than what many states are already doing today,"said Rodriguez. "The goals of this plan is to use a combination of funding sources to reduce the uninsured population that's using the local funds, federal funds. Federal Medicaid funds that are provided to Guam."
Rodriguez identifies major funding sources for the expansion.
