He weighs 21 pounds!
Edgar the cat was surrendered to the Humane Society of Carroll County in Maryland when his owner could no longer keep him. (Edgar, it turned out, didn't get along with his owner's grandchildren.) The staff at the humane society were shocked when they first saw Edgar because of how huge he is.
The 9-year-old cat weighs in at 21 pounds, which is much larger than an average cat. (He's not quite as big, however, as Samson, who was recently named New York City's largest cat.)
Edgar truly is a gentle giant, and the staffers who helped process him into the shelter were amazed at how loving and patient he was.
"Edgar was so sweet coming into the shelter and handled his intake process with shining stars," Michelle Fidler, director of animal care at the Humane Society of Carroll County, told The Dodo.
Since Edgar was so noticeably large, Fidler thought the shelter's Facebook followers might enjoy seeing his picture, and was shocked by how excited people got over him.
---
Edgar the gigantic cat became an internet sensation, and people from all over the country began bombarding the shelter with adoption requests for the very special cat. A local woman heard about Edgar, too, and that day she and her boyfriend made their way over to the shelter to make Edgar the newest member of their family.
"As soon as I saw his picture, I was in awe," Jenna Schwartz, Edgar's new mom, told The Dodo. "I've never seen a cat that big before, he really catches your eye. He's gorgeous!"

(7,754 posts)Most laid back, gentlest cat we ever had. Only problem we ever had was that they have a very dense fine hair layer next to their body and when it sheds, it sticks to everything. Not like regular cat hair but very, very, fine and sticky. It did tend to give us allergies. Still, I would have another one in a heartbeat.

(19,567 posts)They're amazing cats with very long life spans. Mine is 21 years old now, and beyond some minor arthritis still going strong.
It makes my heart happy to see this one get a new loving home! ❤️
Thank you for sharing!

(34,469 posts)Comments on how huge she is. She's a bit fatter than he is though.
That woman is good hearted to take in a 9 year old. Yay!!!

(3,424 posts)He looked like a normal sized little kitty. Orange tabby.
When he grew into his full adulthood he became enormous. People often commented on it. But his head was huge too. And he was so muscular.
And like this kitty in the story, he was the sweetest and best natured of any cat I'd had before. Back then we had never heard of Maine Coons. Now, I believe he had to have been one. I loved him so much and he loved me so much too.
Probably a stupid question I have here. Can Maine Coons be anywhere? I ask because I am clear across the county from there.

(11,920 posts)I'm in Texas, and someone dumped a kitten in the neighborhood, and I adopted him, and he's at least part Maine Coon. He's about 2-1/2 years old and is over 12 pounds.

She's going to love that kat.
The other one doesn't look happy though. That's probably because cats will always reject another one when they come back from the vets. It has to do with the smells they collect. The best way to introduce a new cat, or one coming back from the vets, is to give them a bath right away to remove all foreign odors.
Having taken in a multitude of cats, it removes the three day conflict with the ones who are or remain in the home.

(31,402 posts)Mouse's father was the biggest cat I'd ever seen when I went to get a couple of "free kitties" from a little
old cat lady (her house was full of cats) who'd put an ad in the Lincoln (NE) paper.
Both have gone on to the Rainbow bridge now, but here they were together on a lamp table that has a diameter of 26".

(115,831 posts)but they aren't as common here, and I think they have more almond-shaped eyes and longer noses. So probably Maine Coon.

(14,337 posts)He followed my then young daughter home, walked in the house, and never left. When we took him to the Vet, he estimated that he was still a kitten of around 7 or 8 months old. KITTEN? We thought he was a full grown cat! Vet just laughed when I asked him how big this cat was going to get. Yes, 25 lbs. worth of big.
BTW, when my daughter's young friends came over they always asked what kind of an ANIMAL he was. lol

(14,337 posts)When I would lay down on the sofa, Butter tried to come up on top of me and stretch out. Not happening with 5'1" 98 lb. me. He stretched from my neck to my knees and would fall off. 6'1" 200 lb.Daddy was a better choice for him.
BTW, Butter lived to be 16 years old. Our other Maine Coon (20 lbs.) lived to be 22 years old. Maine Coons, the "Gentle Giants" of the feline world, apparently are very healthy. Must be all from all their wild Maine ancestors hash weather living in their genes. Same with their Norwegian Forest cat cousins.
