http://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/11/29/1605134/-Jeff-Sessions-Protections-for-disabled-kids-are-ruining-America-s-schoolsThe single most irritating problem for teachers throughout America today. Boy, thats saying something. In his statement, Sessions repeatedly cited the federal government falling short of its funding commitments to help schools comply with the lawbut his answer was not full funding, it was going harder on disabled kids. This wasn't just an empty speech:
Sessions comments about disabled students appear to be drawn from his own experience as Alabamas attorney general. In the mid 1990s, Sessions fought school equality after a judge ruled on behalf of about 30 of the states poor school districts who sought reforms. The case continued to languish in the courts while disability advocates worried that the poorest school systems didnt have enough to fund the bare essentials for special needs students, according to a New York Times account. The case ended in 1997 ― after Sessions won a senate seat.
Add disabled children to the long list of people and principles Jeff Sessions wont be protecting as attorney general.
Um, yeah, Jeff. Me and my 1570 SATs (old system, out of 1600) singlehandedly destroyed public education in this country.

And forget the robot ship LASER destructo blasters. Also forget lizards (nope, David Icke!).
Unfortunately, Drumpf and his idiots would still try to destroy them.
Frankly, I'm hoping for Organians, to show the way.

(844 posts)I would have been left to flounder in 'Special Ed' if not for those 'protections' he speaks of. As someone with CP I have what most consider illegible penmanship. But because I was given access to computers as early as first grade , I was able to not only prove my competence - but excel. Today I am a grad student and nothing has made me feel better about my sometimes shitty situation than my education and my achievements within academics.

(61,695 posts)And I remember what it was like before children had rights related to their disabilities. A male friend had CP affecting one side of his body. Still, the PE teacher made him do the same fitness tests, including having to traverse the horizontal ladder, even though only one arm had enough strength to hang, much less transfer across. He was humiliated in front of his friends and peers on that and other tests.
I fear that disabled children will be seen as problems by their peers, and this will transfer into discrimination as adults. A candidate that mocks a disabled person sets a very poor example.

(5,997 posts)My kid is now in college on a full ride, books/tuition/room & board, the whole thing.
He had an IEP the entire time he was in public school, along with some classroom accommodations.
Scored 32 on ACT, graduated with high honors, was on soccer & swim teams, took enough AP classes to have an entire semester of college complete before shipping off to school.
This is the type of thing that Sessions cannot stand to see....an educated, compassionate, tolerant, informed liberal.
