There has been a lot of talk about Russia influencing the US elections. And many other accusations of fraud etc. I'm not going to talk about those cases because I don't know enough details to know what the truth is necessarily. But it strikes me that in a bit of a turn of bitter irony America is in some pays particularly prone to election fraud, corruption and rigging. Precisely because America believes so adamantly that they are the oh so "greatest nation on earth". As a foreigner looking in its a particularly quirky aspect of America that never seems to wane, their unflagging belief that they have the perfect system, that it can't happen here, that stuff only happens over there. This supreme belief in their own superiority, often flying in the face of evidence to the contrary has at times actually been a kind of strength. But of course such a huge blind spot is also a great weakness. Because yes it can happen here. And in some ways it's most likely to happen where you think it never can.
