I would have been much quicker to criticize his rule if we didn't just elect a racist, xenophobic, anti-semitic. misogynistic, authoritarian to be our president.

American exceptionalism is dead !

With the election of Donald Trump the United States government has surrendered the right to criticize any foreign leader, for anything.

We have become what we have behold.

As to my politics I am a small l and small d liberal democrat. I don't care much for leaders who aren't liberal democrats whether they are of the left or right.

Our democracy isn't perfectly democratic as the 2016 election shows. But at least we require our leaders to face the voters. Cuba doesn't.

I am a liberal democrat before being a Liberal Democrat.

The rule of law
Due process
Habeas corpus
Pluralism
Individual rights
Sanctity of the ballot
...

are at the core of civil society. We elected a man who mocks those principles.

They both were/are enemies of liberal democracy although they were attacking it from different places.

Good to see you criticize. You are one of the most fair voices here when it comes to critical analysis. Not something we should lose simply because we elected a monster.

The latter is constrained by a constitution. Let's hope it is strong enough to temper his excesses.

The one thing they have in common is a cavalier attitude toward the use of nuclear weapons. Trump asked his generals three times why we can't use them. Castro asked Khrushchev why he wouldn't use the nuclear weapons installed in Cuba on the U.S. Khrushchev told him that suggestion was crazy.
