ThinkProgress will no longer describe racists as ‘alt-right’

With that in mind, ThinkProgress will no longer treat “alt-right” as an accurate descriptor of either a movement or its members. We will only use the name when quoting others. When appending our own description to men like Spencer and groups like NPI, we will use terms we consider more accurate, such as “white nationalist” or “white supremacist.”

“White nationalist” refers to a specific ideology held by many of those who adopt the “alt-right” label. A white nationalist is someone who believes the United States should be governed by and for white people, and that national policy should radically advance white interests. White supremacists are a broader and more inchoate group, comprised of those who believe in the innate superiority of white people.

We will describe people and movements as neo-Nazis only when they identify as such, or adopt important aspects of Nazi rhetoric and iconography.

The point here is not to call people names, but simply to describe them as they are. We won’t do racists’ public relations work for them. Nor should other news outlets.

Nazis.

Yes, I now that refers to the National Socialists of 1920s and 1930s Germany, but it really does apply. And the Neo sounds like some sort of qualifier that makes it all acceptable.

Gives that warm fuzzy feeling.

Hell you don't excpect the MSM to come out and say today on blah blah show, our guest is going to be the head racists...................tune in at six, because we are trying to say that they are only "alt right", you know that detour that we don't want to talk about, bigotry and racists, that they are. Then they can put there disclaimer below the new name they give the individual, I know how about "contributor of analyst", they will hide what he or she really is!!!!!

Because you know they will want to bring them on there "shows" for entertainment value, just as Les Moovees, and Jeff Zucker

We aren't doing ourselves any favors by clouding the definition of this 'alt-right' label. It's not a synonym for 'Neo-Nazi'. This is one of those frogs/toads situations... all frogs are toads, but not all toads are frogs.

'Alt-right' is an umbrella term for a mostly online phenomenon that's risen up in the last few years, and appeals mostly to younger people who feel their concerns aren't addressed by the political establishment. There's a whole range of groups that self-identify as 'alt-right'. They're mostly right-wing or libertarian causes, and may or or may not have anything to do one another.

I'm seeing a lot of people try to shove this decidedly idiosyncratic, square peg into the political round holes they're used to. It just doesn't work.

Which is the intent of the framing white supremacists as "alt right"... it is an attempt to normalize this horrific movement. The alt right is the KKK with keyboards instead of robes and hoods.

There is no attempt to put a square peg into a round hole ... its is a perfect fit for the round hole

https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/ideology/alternative-right
The Alternative Right, commonly known as the Alt-Right, is a set of far-right ideologies, groups and individuals whose core belief is that “white identity” is under attack by multicultural forces using
“political correctness” and “social justice” to undermine white people and “their” civilization. Characterized by heavy use of social media and online memes, Alt-Righters eschew “establishment” conservatism, skew young, and embrace white ethno-nationalism as a fundamental value.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2016/11/22/alt-right-trump-white-nationalist-clinton-breitbart-spencer/94273282/
The two groups have similar focuses and goals and white-nationalists can be part of the alt-right movement. But Hawley said the difference is the alt-right movement has no real formal organization and mostly exists online.

“I think part of it is more a difference of style and marketing than a difference in substance, though I would note that it seems like most of the leading figures of the alt-right do disavow things like genocide, which some of the more outrageous earlier white nationalists didn’t necessarily do," Hawley told the Post.

On September 9, 2016, several leaders of the alt-right community held a press conference, described by one reporter as the "coming-out party" of the little-known movement, to explain their goals. They proclaimed racialist beliefs, stating "Race is real, race matters, and race is the foundation of identity."

What I said is accurate. I realize it doesn't conform to the simple, two-color scheme that our political ideologues like to paint with, but it's accurate. I don't see what we gain from reducing a complex picture to a cartoon, and trying to beat people into accepting it with these predictable, kneejerk, not-so-veiled accusations of bigotry.

By the way, the SPLC lost it's credibility when it labelled Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Maajid Nawaz 'anti-Muslim extremists'.

You are taking something rather simplistic and attempting to make it conform it to your opinion by adding false attributes in order to dilute what the "movement" is.

The "founder" or "leader" (admittedly he is merely a representative) coined the term and clearly defined it.

There is nothing nuanced, subtle or complex about the movement or its defenders.

You may call it knee jerk to soundly and completely condemn the KKK, Nazis, Christian identity movements (which do not embrace all Christians, solely white Christians) and all hate groups but those that monitor them and those opposed to them have no issue with their condemnation or the condemnation of the "alt right" which serves to provide an umbrella to cover these splinter and hate groups.

Your defense of the alt right uses the defense the Breitbart team and Bannon (and Breitbart editor) used in this interview ... it is almost verbatim.

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/listen-to-steve-bannon-defending-the-racist-alt-right-one-week-before-joining-trump-campaign/

I thought you would want to know that your definition and defense is mirrored by those attempting to legitimize the alt right and is used by no one else. Hopefully, it will give you an opportunity to reassess the alt right.

Alternative has lots of positive connotations like alternative energy, comedy etc. better than what it replaced. It also allows them to cite Godwin's law whenever anyone calls a spade a spade. These people are through the looking glass, the liberals are the intolerant ones because they won't swallow the bullshit about how the poor white people are being drowned under a tide of political correctness gone mad.

Simple answers appeal to idiots like this, it's a lot easier to blame all this crap on a black president than robber baron capitalism and lack of union representation in the developing world.
