http://www.wvgazettemail.com/news-politics/20161118/joe-manchin-says-hell-back-trump-picks-for-administrationSen. Joe Manchin, West Virginias lone Democrat in Congress, said Friday there would need to be something scathing for him to oppose President-elect Donald Trumps staff selections for his administration.
Ive always given every executive a chance, unless theres just something scathing that comes out, Manchin said Friday, during a visit to Dem 2 Brothers Grill and BBQ on Charlestons West Side. Right now, Im not going to pass judgment. I dont like this toxic rhetoric thats gone on in this campaign, and I hope that subsides and moves on. But lets see. You have to give a person a chance.
In recent days, Trump has filled several cabinet and advisory positions including Stephen Bannon, the executive chairman of right-wing website Breitbart News, as his senior counselor and chief strategist a position that does not have to get Senate approval.
Trumps selection of Bannon, who has been a major voice of a fringe wing of the Republican Party, was immediately condemned by many Democrats in Congress because of his ties to white-nationalist messaging. But Manchin said Friday he was unlikely to criticize or push back against Trumps appointments.

Dem senator backing Sessions for attorney general
Sen. Jeff Sessions's (R-Ala.) bid to become the next attorney general has the backing of a Democratic senator.
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) says he's supporting President-elect Donald Trump's pick of Sessions, journalist Salena Zito tweeted Friday afternoon.

Manchin's support is a big boost to Sessions's chances. He needs a simple majority in the Senate to be confirmed, and the GOP is expected to control 52 seats in the chamber after next month's Louisiana runoff elections.

Manchin, who faces a potentially difficult reelection bid in 2018, has created headlines since last week's election for breaking with his party. After outgoing Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) ripped Trump in a statement, Manchin called his rhetoric an "absolute embarrassment."

(90,769 posts)I watched Alito and Roberts get confirmed, as well as many other people who should never have been confirmed (for any reason) over the years. So...
I've written letters, emails, made phone calls expressing my displeasure at this or that possible confirmation, and it did no good.
I'll still write and call, but I don't expect the results to be any better this time around.
Doesn't matter how dry your powder is if you never use it and better angels are the ones actively fighting against the oppression of others. Better angels don't hope for an authoritarian to play nice. Better angels know better.
And just because someone will be confirmed no matter how you vote, it doesn't mean you vote for someone horrible in hopes of garnering a favor down the line. Once you cave while hoping to gain favor, they know you'll cave again and again for that same reason.
They never have to listen or compromise, they don't have to - because you're doing all the compromising needed to enable them.
And, NO. No, no, no, no. A president does not deserve the cabinet of their choice as long as those choices would be bad for the country. And the undeniable fact is - a racist President (P-e) can't be trusted to make a good choice. Especially since it has already been proven by the choices that president-elect has already made.
But that's just my opinion and it isn't worth anything to anyone but me.
