Thanksgiving. Or Christmas for that matter. I'm really upset and angry right now. I know its his job, but is this timing just a coincidence or does it have something to do with the changing of the guard?

I don't think we can blame Trump for this.
The attack on Mosul began some weeks ago and U.S. military advisors have been with them all along.

politics affected decisions to deploy more troops. Not necessarily Trump people, but people in the DOD that might see being more hawkish as being to their advantage down the road.
