Ehlena Fry, a 12-year-old Michigan girl with cerebral palsy, has been at odds for years with her former school over the use of her service dog Wonder.
Today her case made its way to the Supreme Court.
In 2009, when Fry was just 5 years old, Wonder entered her life. The Goldendoodle was prescribed by her doctor and trained to help Fry with daily activities, including opening doors, turning on and off lights and taking her coat off.
The school denied her family and pediatricians request to allow Wonder to assist Fry in the classroom.
Her parents sued in federal court, but the case was dismissed. At issue before the Court is the technical matter of whether the suit can be brought in federal court or should the matter should be resolved in state administrative proceedings.

(115 posts)I do think that the standard for 'service animal' is too loose right now (My purse chihuahua calms my nerves and I need him always) but someone is making this much harder than it has to be.

(3,212 posts)If I see one more service chihuahua, service pig, service ferret (yeah, I know...for emotional support), I'm going to scream.
And, no, you cannot hold your emotional support cat on a plane while sitting next to me. I have a severe allergy to cats, and could die!

(115 posts)If there's a guy with no shit PTSD and Mr. Whiskers is his one chance to interact with the world? Ok...
I'd ask him to move somewhere else on the plane before I asked you.
My point is that the difference between that guy and someone who doesn't want their pet to ride below and got a certificate is nebulous at best.

(22,651 posts)I agree the girl was humiliated when the school refused to allow her to use her trained dog for things like going to the bathroom.
Instead the school had a human attendant assist the girl with bathroom breaks, when outside the school the dog always assisted the girl.
The school admin even made the girl demonstrate to the admin, 5? adults watching the dog assist the girl onto the toilet.
