Does the FBI automatically investigate arson?

They're investigating the vandalism and 'firebombing' (Molotov cocktail) of the repug office in Hillsborough, NC.

It's on the front page of their website with a photo of the building.
Big Sign that says "REPUBLICAN HEADQUARTERS".
Also on the "Most Wanted" page.

Arson is not usually considered a federal crime unless the property burned was within federal jurisdiction on account of being on federal property, or a federal officer was injured, or a "weapon of mass destruction" (a bomb) was used. If there was a bomb the ATF would also probably be involved. The FBI might be investigating this because there apparently was a fire bomb.

is joined by the fbi. they may not lead, but they participate.

Don't know why an apartment fire would be investigated, unless a hate crime was suspected.
