For the past 40 years, he has maintained fastidiously a trim 28 inch waist. And while Sir Mick Jagger has always credited his energetic on stage performances for helping him stay slim, he has another rather more acrobatic way of shedding the pounds - antigravity aerial yoga. The 73-year-old star has taken up the demanding practice which sees devotees strung up in a hammock suspended six feet in the air, using their own bodyweight to perform demanding gymnastic exercises.
Sir Mick Jagger, 73, is doing antigravity aerial yoga which sees devotees strung up in a hammock suspended six feet in the air, using their own bodyweight to perform demanding gymnastic exercises
Not for the faint-hearted, it requires some serious strength - and those unable to keep up often risk serious injury crashing to the floor, head first. But fans claim it increases strength, boosts levels of the feel-good hormones serotonin and dopamine and, incredibly, can even make you taller.
In an exercise regime not out of line with that of an Olympic athlete, the Rolling Stone trains six days a week. As well as employing a full-time personal trainer, one who has previously worked with international football teams and, indeed, Olympic athletes, Jagger also performs ballet, weight-training, pilates, jogging and dynamic stretching, ensuring he maintains maximum flexibility.
Nuno Campos, a leading anti-gravity yoga teacher-trainer at Virgin Active, says it is little wonder the Rolling Stone is a fan. He explains: There are numerous benefits from practicing antigravity aerial yoga, most notably that it increases both muscular flexibility and joint mobility, and is particularly helpful in strengthening the core. It also offers muscular tension release through decompression and hydration of the vertebral discs within the spinal column. This allows for more space for the nerves within the spinal cord, which can ease pain and effectively help elongate the spine.

(6,386 posts)Go to a Stones concert. Love him or hate him - doing what he does for 2 hours on stage takes some serious stamina.
The guys who's more amazing is Keith Richards. By all accounts, he should have been dead 35 years ago (and he looks like that may actually have happened) but he keeps trucking.
Good that they all collectively own the Rolling Stones Corporation - if they worked for any other company they would have been retired out 20 years ago. lol.

(6,386 posts)...when asked. "Why do you do it. You're rich enough for generations and certainly don't need the money. You could set up shop somewhere in london a pack the house all night every night if you want to play...why do all this road work."
Mick's responds (approximately):
"The Rolling Stones are more than just a band. We're a company. We have 70 employees who design the stage, book the travel, pay the bills, move the equipment...all the stuff that supports the band on tour. And many of these people have been with us for a long time, some multiple generations. If we don't tour, they don't send their kids to school, or pay for their homes or do all the other things that come with having a predictable income. Sure - I can live on my savings but not all of them can. Our job in the Rolling Stones company is to go out on tour and if we don't do our jobs, it all falls apart."
Spoken like a true graduate of the London School of Economics.
They're getting long in the tooth and the shows are a little less than what they were 20-25 years ago but ya gotta love 'em.

(9,275 posts)The fitness stuff is genetic. IIRC his dad contributed to textbooks for phys ed teachers as well as teaching. Like the Beatles (except Ringo) the Stones didn't come from a "lower working class" background either.
