Sometimes profound words come from unlikely places. The following dialogue is transcribed from last night's Madam Secretary The Dissent Memo. Stevie McCord is worried about how the decision of her fiancé Jareth to abandon an Oxford fellowship to stay in the U.S. which caused the displeasure and disinheritance of his titled, oh so, proper British family will play out in the future. Will Jareth regret the loss of family and country and come to resent Stevie?
Stevie: Isn't this where you give me the wise counsel of experience?
Henry: Sorry I got nothing... except welcome to marriage. Huge important life decisions with unexpected consequences all taken on a leap of faith.
Stevie: What if we stay and he ends up resenting me for losing everything?
Henry: Oh Honey, he will. At some point and you guys will work through it.... or not, that can happen too.
Stevie: That's it? What about the, you know, if you love each other you can make it through anything?
Henry: You know what my Dad said to me before I got married? 'Marriage is the nicest way to confront your own inadequacies on a daily basis.'
Stevie: You should write that in a song.
Henry: It's also the greatest journey you'll ever go on....And, you get to go on it with your best friend'
