(65,044 posts)Now, i hope Cleveland loses because it means the Cubs win and i went to my first Cubs game in 1961. But, this guy makes me feel a lot better about rooting against Cleveland.

(43,182 posts)...I'm rooting for the Indians as a team.
The players seem more down to earth than the Cubs.
Besides, Cubs fans can be major jerks as well--check out "Catching Hell", the documentary about Steve Bartman.

(3,728 posts)and I hope everyone who participated in the jeering and threats and such watched that documentary. If they still have any anti Bartman sentiment they are sub human.
That said, still rooting for the Cubs. Any fan base would have likely reacted in a similar fashion. I think most fans in retrospect realize their reaction was inappropriate. At least those who watched Catching Hell.

(36,827 posts)It's not even about this one fan in particular for me. It's about sports teams that ridicule an entire race. Imagine what a black person would think of a sports team named for an African-American slur, or one that had a logo of a parodied black person's face. That is what this is like for me.

(24,396 posts)I grew up an Indians fan in Ashtabula, Ohio (where Trump is campaigning today. Sigh.) i have major arguments with my family and high school classmates over Cleveland's continued use of their racist mascot. Even the team name needs to be changed, IMO.
I don't understand why sports fans cling to racist images like Chief Wahoo, or team names like The Redskins. What would be so bad about retiring the name and renaming the team after an animal or some other benign entity? The fact is that back in the old days, many sports teams changed their names when they relocated or they were taken over by new management. Today, any change is seen as stealing someone's birthright.
The continued use of these racist symbols is a stark example of a majority telling minorities etc what they are allowed to find offensive. What makes it worse is the reality that people who have lived a life of privilege - as have white people - tend to find equality to be oppressive, when and if equality gains a foothold. Ergo, pointing out that a longstanding team symbol embodies racism is seen as oppressing the rights of those who are not being oppressed by the symbol.

(36,437 posts)The Cubs are owned by the Ricketts family.
Some members of the Ricketts family pledged money to Trump for the general after supporting Trump's opponents in the primaries. The Ricketts are certainly mostly Republicans, but whether they are "big Trump supporters" is another question.
The active owner, Tom Ricketts, hasn't publicly endorsed anyone as far as I can tell.
Do you have other information?

(36,437 posts)As far as I know, the real operating owner (Tom Ricketts) has made no public endorsement. I believe it was the old man who gave a million to Trump after opposing him in the primaries.
Laura Ricketts is certainly active in Dem politics.

(23,340 posts)In the promotion of healthy Native communities through education and activism, Cleveland A.I.M. has led the fight against American Indian caricatures and mascots. In January 1972, Cleveland A.I.M. sued Cleveland Baseball for libel and slander, in an unsuccessful effort to change the Cleveland Indians team name and abolish its shameful, racist dead-Indian-head logo Chief Wahoo. Through our Campaign for Dignity, we have demonstrated at Cleveland Home Openers since 1973.
In 1995, we sued Gateway Corporation, who manages the stadium where Cleveland Baseball plays, for violating our civil and legal right to speak on public property. Their attempt to squash our demonstrations failed, and we continue to protest at every Opening Day. We will continue to pursue all avenues of disruption until the Little Red Sambo Chief Wahoo has gone the way of Little Black Sambo and the Frito Bandito.
In 1999, we filed a civil rights complaint against "Cleveland Indians" baseball with the Ohio Commission on Civil Rights.
Our fight in Ohio does not end there. In 2007, after a year-long effort working with local Natives and other activists, we successfully petitioned Oberlin School Board (Oberlin, Ohio) to change its district's Oberlin Indians team name and Indian-head mascot. Our Campaign for Dignity in Education is focusing on eliminating the use of bigoted and racist imagery in secondary education throughout Ohio.
When I was at Oberlin High School 35 years ago, I attempted to lead an effort to change the team name. I failed miserably. I am glad it is now changed.

(36,827 posts)I wouldn't even go as far as to say this guy is an asshole. He is just doing exactly what the team itself is encouraging by using the name and mascot.

(21,056 posts)Beyond the fact that the owner of the Cubs is steering MANY millions of dollars to Trump for anonymous donors through his PAC, and this --- "NYDailyNews - Trump threatens family that owns Cubs, now they support him -
Sep 21, 2016 - Family that owns Chicago Cubs supports Donald Trump," the Cubs owners have done a complete 180 and now support him"
But, also, I've been to pow wows, I'm about a quarter Cherokee and have always been interested in the culture, and they have all kinds of things at pow wows you can buy and wear, now, in saying that, doing a crappy impersonation 'attempt' at appearing Native American for a sporting event - yeah, that's pretty weak. In fact, if you're going to do it, at least give it your all, because, either way, be prepared to answer why you're dressed that way, and why look so disrespectful and lazy if you're going to do something you oughta know may not go over well.
