(246 posts)That is believable. Those of us who keep up with computer security news have known about the danger of these "internet of things" devices being hacked for purposes like this. The manufacturers screw up, making it very easy for people with limited skills to commandeer them for denial of service attacks. It is not sophisticated.

(38,012 posts)That code was released as Open Source, Oct 1 on the HackerForums bulletin board.
In other words, any script-kiddie could have done it.

(9,115 posts)a powerful high tech state was able to accomplish it.
I'd like to see a connection made between the alt-righties internet people backing drumpf and the Putin people who've been hacking the dems and state elections computers.

(118 posts)I once hacked into a private racialist forum online. The password of the moderator was very easy to guess. It started with an n and ended with a r. From there, I was able to find out the true identity of the moderator based on his registered AOL email. He lived in Connecticut with a family and ran a company that was bought out by another company in New Jersey. I debated whether to call the fucker out.

I disagree with your premise 1000% percent, roughly, by the way.

(6,342 posts)Whether Russia is behind the DNC hacks or not, to think they are the only ones attacking us is laughable.
There are hackers who are state-sponsored, yes. But there are also hackers who are individuals and hackers who are parts of independent groups. They may have financial motives. They may have political motives. Some just want to wreak havoc and brag about it. They feel a thrill of breaking into systems just to see if they can do it. Some just want to steal naked pictures of celebrities. There are all sorts of motives out there.
But to suggest Russia is doing it all.....no. Every country in this world has hackers.
