Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy changed course Thursday after asking for a court-appointed lawyer to defend him in the Bunkerville standoff case.
Bundy told U.S. Magistrate Judge Peggy Leen that he and his family have never taken government handouts including free public school lunches for his children and that he wants to take a stab at paying for his legal defense himself ...
And after seeing that Bundy and his wife, Carol, estimated they had $312,800 in assets, primarily from their ranch and several hundred head of cattle, Leen suggested that was a good idea.
She said he has more than enough assets to pay for his own lawyer and does not qualify for public assistance ...

LAS VEGAS (CN) Cliven Bundy will have a new attorney representing him against 16 felony charges stemming from his armed standoff with law enforcement in 2014, but he will have to pay for it.
Bundy, 70, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Peggy Leen Thursday morning and again in the afternoon, asking to have Las Vegas attorney Bret Whipple confirmed as his legal counsel to replace Joel Hansen ...
Whipple told Leen that Bundy had paid him a $1,000 retainer, and Bundy on Thursday filed paperwork to have Whipple appointed via the Criminal Justice Act which Leen denied, as Bundy has more than $300,000 in assets available.
Leen expressed concern Bundy might try to manipulate the system by changing his legal representation again, and said she wants continuity in his legal representation ...

(21,506 posts)His whole business is based on using government lands for free. He is only in this predicament because he refused to pay for that usage.
He doesn't accept government hand outs he demands them.

(34,661 posts)Looking at this and going,you sure you want to open up your Family Trust in order to Mortgage your Hoval or Dump of a Ranch(167 acres)to hire the above named Lawyer? Well well,old Bundy just set himself for Government Tax Liens and they will be First liens ahead of any other claims.
Interesting. He owes some million to a million and a half in grazing fees,the number cruncher' s are loving this one.
