President Obama issues executive order to prepare for severe space weather

Extreme weather on earth can cause major devastation. But scientists said it would pale in comparison to what a major solar storm could do.

"If we get a direct hit here on earth, it can cause our power grids to go down. It can damage our satellites," said Dr. Valerie Rapson an astrophysicist for the Dudley Observatory at miSci in Schenectady.

I read the executive order which I suggest many read if anybody has the link to the executive order please post it

I thought this was interesting in the direct order

(a) Within 120 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of Energy, in consultation with the Secretary of Homeland Security, shall develop a plan to test and evaluate available devices that mitigate the effects of geomagnetic disturbances on the electrical power grid through the development of a pilot program that deploys such devices, in situ, in the electrical power grid.


It looks like development of a device that would test geomagnetic disturbances on the electric power grid

are they talking about a EMP event or similar?

but there is a man made EMP event also and this directive would be a could safeguard for even that

Types of military EMP include:
Nuclear electromagnetic pulse (NEMP), as a result of a nuclear explosion. A variant of this is the high altitude nuclear EMP (HEMP), which produces a pulse of a much larger amplitude and different characteristics due to particle interactions with the Earth's atmosphere and subsequently the Earth's magnetic fields driving an oscillation in electric current after the original pulse from the particle and ray interactions on the atmosphere.
