POSTED BY KYLE ANDERSON ON OCTOBER 14, 2016
Few serialized television shows can offer the same kind of punchy science fiction or horror plots that an anthology series can. Theyre only beholden to the 25 or 45 minutes they have to tell the story and any character or contrivance is fair game to play with, fast and loose-style. Already weve talked about scary episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark? and the 1960s The Outer Limits, but wed be remiss if we didnt pay tribute to the godfather of this genre, a show that gave audiences 156 episodes of terrifying morality plays between 1959 and 1964: The Twilight Zone.
Rod Serlings vision of realities slightly twisted from our own gave birth to such shows as Black Mirror and Tales from the Crypt in addition to the ones mentioned above. While The Twilight Zonewasnt the first show of this kind, its constant repeating on cableholiday marathons on Syfy (née The Sci-Fi Channel) anyone?has made it the cultural touchstone for what our fearless leader Chris Hardwick calls Nice Try, Asshole stories.

(13,599 posts)The girl in the top photo is 27-year-old Donna Douglas, who later played the long-running role of "Elly May Clampett" on The Beverly Hillbillies.
The doctor with the mangled face was played by William Gordon, who didn't do much acting but was a prolific writer whose stories were used on numerous shows such as Thriller, Chips, The Fugitive, The Richard Boone Show, Kraft Suspense Theater, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and others.

(40,416 posts)Also, there's "The Outer Limits" whose epitome was Demon with a Glass Hand starring Robert Culp and Arlene Martel (who many will recognize from Star Trek "Amok Time" as Spock's betrothed.) It is one of the great SciFi TV episodes.
But Twilight Zone is the original, never eclipsed.

(13,107 posts)I have seen every episode too many times to count.
My favorite is the one with Agnes Moorehead.
She was the only person in the entire episode and she never spoke a single word.
I watch it every year around the holidays.

(82,849 posts)But I did watch Night Gallery every week when it aired. The theme song was creepy. What I remember is trying to guess what the closing painting was going to be. For those who never saw it, Rod Serling would give an introductory paragraph, standing in front of an easel covered with a cloth. When he was done, he'd remove the cover and the story would begin. Somewhere along the line, a painting or two might figure in the story, and at the end of the story, the painting for the story would be revealed.
Both Twilight Zone and Night Gallery were writers' showcases. The story was a lot more important than the sets, the actors, or the "special" effects (which weren't all that special). I catch the Twilight Zone marathon every New Year's Eve.

(54,770 posts)boyfriend or husband is driving her down the street and she says, "there he is" pointing out a man walking down the street. The boyfriend/husband grabs a wrench out of his car an pulls the man in an alley and presumably kills him. The show didn't show the assault or beating/killing, just left us to imagine.
Then, he gets back in the car and calmly drives on down the street. A few moments later she sees another man and says, "there he is."
The show ends with typical music and the boyfriend/husband looking like all the blood is draining out of his body.
A great show. I don't think it would work as well today unless writers, producers came up with a new way of portraying such stories.
