(82,849 posts)But, just like I don't give a rip about the Baseball Hall of Fame (the exclusive province of the Baseball Writers Association of America) or the Academy Awards (nobody decides those but the members of the academy), I can't get too worked up about a prize bestowed by any group that I don't belong to.

Too much channeling of girls away from mathematics.

Oh, the irony of your sentiment; regardless of the irrelevance of free expression.

(13,598 posts)I don't think that the Nobel prize committee discriminate against women, and I don't think that they should discriminate in their favour; I think that the reason most Nobel prizes go to men is because most of the best candidates are men.
However, I think that while the reason that most of the best candidates are men may be partly biological, a very large part of it is due to the fact that, on average*, it's much harder to become a good candidate for a Nobel prize if you're female, because of social and cultural obstacles.
And that is something I think it's not OK not to be angry about, even though the response of the Nobel prize committee in itself does not make me angry.
*The "on average" disclaimer is absolutely vital here - without it, this statement ceases to be true.

From computer programming to nuclear fission to the paper bag machine, it's time to stop erasing these women from their great works.

(2,067 posts)What are they supposed to do, rank all candidates first by race, gender, and sexual orientation (in that priority order, because let's be honest, sexual orientation clearly has a back seat to the other two in 2016), eliminate all the white men, and then pick the best achievements from those who are left?
Sounds like the direction the Oscars wants to go so why not, right?
