went shaky and disappeared. Assuming of course that the rest of the country was even watching a local World Series.

For my part, I was busy trying the catch the dishes that were raining out of the kitchen cabinets. (Turns out that's a bad idea...)

No stranger to big earthquakes, I was thinking about people and hoping they were safe.

It was rolling and we stayed outside on the playground all day. The light poles were waving like palm trees..

The quake hit just as I got home. I was on the hill in Twin Peaks, so the shaking wasn't that bad at my house. Went outside and saw parts of the city on fire.

So I would have been in downtown Santa Cruz for a bite before heading over to a friends house to continue the campaign. However I wasn't feeling well and went home. I was in a bookstore in Boulder Creek when it hit.

He ran a towing company and had a 5 ton wrecker parked there. The truck was literally bouncing on its springs.

I was involved with the Jaws of Life rescue tools at the time and was kept very busy for the next week repairing tools that were being used to extricate vehicles and bodies trapped in the Cypress structure collapse.

Devastating event for a lot of reasons.

At least living in a hurricane zone we have several days warning, and half the time it ends up being a big nothing anyways.

I do remember that World Series, though, and all the earthquake footage. The home video of the bridge collapsing was haunting.
