He was known as being "mean spirited"in the Senate. I don't think he is all there any more.

Republicans in his day were far more moderate - pretty much on the level of a moderate Dem, like Hillary Clinton (minus the trickle-down economics love affair). So it surprises me that he even supported Trump to begin with.
