As you well know, Proposition 63, my initiative to protect the public by keeping guns and ammo out of the wrong hands, is on California’s November ballot. The debate surrounding the initiative comes at a critical moment in the broader discussion about what can and should be done to reduce gun violence.
I am writing to formally invite you to join that debate – come to California and debate me about gun violence in general, and Prop 63 specifically.
I appreciate that you are a proponent of debates, having asked the President for “a one-on-one, one-hour debate – with a mutually agreed upon moderator – on any network that will take it. No pre-screened questions and no gas-bag answers.”
I agree – let’s do it. At least one one-on-one, hour-long debate – or even a series of debates across California – no pre-screened questions and no gas-bag answers.
Of course, my initiative isn’t the only gun-related campaign on November’s ballot that we disagree about. When Donald Trump promised to mandate that every school in America allow guns in classrooms, you enthusiastically endorsed him. When Hillary Clinton promised to stand up to the gun lobby, you told her “bring it on… we’re bringing the fight to you.”
We clearly have a lot to discuss. As you said, “bring it on.”
When we announced the initiative your allies immediately threatened me personally, saying, “we’re certainly going to bring the fight to him” and recent headlines announced, “NRA Opens Fire on Gavin Newsom’s Gun Control Initiative” and “NRA Adopts Scare Tactics in New Ads.”
The NRA has been incessantly tweeting about Prop 63 – but voters deserve more substance than the 140 characters in a tweet. There’s simply too much at stake – the issue deserves a thoughtful debate, and you are the leader of the nation’s most prominent pro-gun organization leading the opposition to my initiative. I look forward to hearing from you and I look forward to debating you.
