'Trump Plaza' street sign has to go, Chicago alderman says

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20161005/BLOGS02/161009920/trump-plaza-street-sign-has-to-go-ald-reilly-says

Donald Trump is trailing in the polls and may well lose his race for president. But now the big-talking New York businessman stands to suffer an even worse indignity: losing his honorary Chicago street name.

Under a proposed ordinance introduced today by Ald. Brendan Reilly, whose 42nd Ward includes Trump Tower, a stretch of Wabash running from the river north to Illinois Street would lose the title "Trump Plaza," returning to plain old North Wabash Avenue.

Trump's "hateful and hurtful rhetoric" during his campaign has hurt not only immigrants, Latinos, women and others, but also the city itself, as Trump holds out Chicago as an example of municipal malfunction, said Reilly—who, it should be noted, also is the Democratic committeeman of the 42nd Ward.

"Mr. Trump is doing our city a great disservice by painting a distorted caricature of Chicago, comparing our great city to a decimated, war-torn city," Reilly added. "In fact, Chicago is a beautiful, welcoming and diverse city," even as it has its "challenges."

of that god-awful monstrosity of a building.

Mr. Donald Trump has bestowed upon fair Chicago an ode to his own self-worth, spurring an architectural debate that’s pulled in Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Jon Stewart, and plenty more.

In June, Trump International Hotel & Tower gained an array of 20-foot-6-inch-tall stainless steel letters spelling T-R-U-M-P, which Curbed called a “big, dumb sign” and Blair Kamin called “as subtle as Godzilla.” Trump didn’t like that, and bashed Kamin as “a lightweight” in the press—Trump, critic of architecture critics!

Already reduced in size about 20 percent from its original plans (The Donald makes no small plans), the sign was always part of the 2008 SOM building’s design, although architect Adrian Smith apparently “had nothing to do” with it. It’s a gaudy bit of self-promotion along Chicago’s most visible strip of real estate, but it’s Trump’s name—not his sign itself—that’s really got us riled up. After all we put up with corporate intrusions on our public field of view all the time. In fact, all this public indignation over design has us hopeful: Let’s rise up and take back our public spaces! Or at least sarcastically Instagram the new sign with its ‘T’ strategically cropped out.

There is something really sick about someone who has to slap their name on everything. Like a friggin' cartoon character.

Chicago is known for its architecture and to have that thing in the midst of its historic buildings is so offensive.
