Louisville bans players from signing autographs for fear of NCAA rules

Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson and his teammates will no longer be allowed to sign autographs due to the school’s growing concerns about NCAA eligibility.

Louisville has seen a dramatic increase in requests for autographs — especially for Heisman frontrunner Jackson — in recent weeks and are worried some of those autographs could be used for profit and cause players to be ruled ineligible by the NCAA.

Louisville’s actions are an attempt to comply with NCAA bylaw 12.5.2.1, which states that a student-athlete could lose his or her eligibility if he or she “[a]ccepts any remuneration for or permits the use of his or her name or picture to advertise, recommend or promote directly the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind.”

If I were Jackson I would walk up to first kid I saw at the next game and sign an autograph with the media present. The university has absolutely no business trying to regulate a student's first amendment rights.

Oh and the U of L makes tons of money on it's sports programs thanks to "employees" like Jackson who work for FREE.

I will also point out that it's far from slavery. These kids are receiving a college education, providing they stay for all four years, free housing and food in exchange for their talent which could potentially land them in the big four sports leagues.

Compare that to a kid who signs an MLB or NBA development contract out of high school making roughly ten thousand a year and sharing a sofa with five other guys while eating PB&J and ramen noodles.

I would also point out that the money male college sports subsidizes women's sports programs that do not generate revenue for the university.

Do university students lose their rights when they are students? can you cite some law supporting that?
