He was one of the many soldiers used as a guinea pigs in atomic testing.

They were exposed to radioactive dust, just like Spot in the comic. They disposed of their uniforms, scrubbed off in field showers, a Geiger counter was waved over them, and then they were told they were good to go.

My father in law is alive and well, but many other soldiers in these experiments were not so fortunate.
