I am one of those who never ask for help....however

I had back surgery few days ago and awoke not being able to walk. The pain is over the top. I have complete movement and feeling in the extremities and was moved to a awesome rehab facility 2 days after the surgery. It's going to be a long haul. I apparently waited too long before having the surgery and although it went well, the damage was done. What I thought would be pretty routine procedure (I am a nurse) has turned into a situation of unexpected misery. I am the "go to" person to my friends and family. If you needed anything.. .I would always be there. I just got my laptop today and here I am on DU asking for help. Any good vibes or prayers would be so appreciated.

if she had waited a few weeks longer it may not have been so bad...

What I am saying is...take as long as it takes to heal, and just because you feel good, it it's not an indication to regain your normal life.

I have back trouble that flares up occasionally to the point of my not being able to walk, but it's never been that bad for more than a couple of days at a time. It must be very difficult for you.

Glad to hear you have an awesome rehab facility and send you all best wishes for the best and fastest possible recovery.

Since you're the go to person, it's time to get some payback. Don't be afraid to ask for it.

Back surgery is one of those things that has people saying they made a mistake, the surgery failed, it hurts worse now that it ever did before. It does get better but it takes a lot longer than soft tissue surgeries.

You will get through this. You will manage to get the pain down to a dull roar and finally to something bearable. This is one of the few times you'll be able to get away with being a whiny crybaby, so I suggest you milk it for all it's worth. It won't last long.

The surgeon said afterwards he also had a herniated disk that he had to repair as well.

It took about two months for my father to mostly recover, and he was slowly walking around with a walker for the first 3 weeks. I had to help him with many things for those several months.

He wouldn't take any opioid painkillers because he doesn't want to risk getting addicted to them.

Even now, he still has trouble bending down too much and occasionally takes acetaminophen for intermittent back pain.

Just wanted to make sure you knew, in case you're old enough for Medicare, that Federal law changed a few years ago and the rehab place can't kick you out after 21 days, like they used to be able to.

I hope that your friends and family are surrounding you with love.

What was the problem that got so much worse with time?

I don't mean to pry. I have disintegrating disks and am scared to death of back surgery. My intent is to put off any surgery until the pain gets intolerable.

I injured my lumbar spine in 1963, playing basketball. I suffered with sciatica and had several re-injuries during for years. Finally, I had surgery in 1986 and was recovering nicely. Eight months later, I got the flu, and coughing tore scar tissue which the doc said had attached itself to the sciatic nerve. The pain was worse than it ever was. My only option was physical therapy in a pain clinic. After eight weeks, the end of the treatment, they wanted to write my employer declaring me disabled. I balked, and they signed me up for another eight weeks. I recovered. I'm 78, now, and I still have trouble, but I had a career of 33 years and have enjoyed retirement since 1998. I know how bleak this looks to you now. But you can do this. Just make up your mind and do whatever it takes. You're not alone. I'm certain that prayers, mine and other people's, helped me through hardest times. I'll pray for you.

you WILL prevail over the pain. Some say that it's ridiculous to think this way but I know of so many, including myself, who it's worked for. It's not a cure all but to me it seems the body knows when you give in to negativity. Praying for you.

I am beginning to wrap my head around all of this. It's called acceptance. I am committed and WILL walk again. There is no quit in me....never was.
I went out of state to have the surgery....knowing now I will not be back in time to vote, I called the town hall in my hometown in Maine to get my absentee ballot mailed. Go Hillary!
Thank you all again for you good wishes.
