Shootings at U.S. colleges deadlier and more frequent, report finds
By Joseph Ax | NEW YORK
Shootings on college campuses over the last five years have more than doubled since a similar period a decade earlier, according to a report released on Monday by a criminal justice reform organization.
The incidents have also grown more deadly, with three times as many people injured or killed during the most recent five-year period, the New York City-based Citizens Crime Commission said.
"It is now appropriate to call our nation's gun violence problem an epidemic," said the commission's president, Richard Aborn.

Monday's report examined 190 shootings from 2001 to 2016 that either involved an intentional shooting on campus or the shooting of a current student within two miles of campus.
There were 40 such incidents from 2001 to 2006 and 101 recorded shootings from 2011 to 2016.

(11,996 posts)"Given that the majority of shooters in these incidents were not students, colleges must work more
closely with local law enforcement in order to keep students safe. Collaboration between these two
groups will make it easier to identify potential threats off-campus and more quickly respond when non-student
shooters endanger the lives of college students and employees."
Fights, robberies, and drugs are the leading causes of incidents, and 59% of shooters aren't students.
20 college-related shooting incidents a year across the whole country may not seem like a lot, but the upward trend is troubling.

(18,318 posts)...you may get a result you were least expecting. After all, most of the stinky-boys (and a couple of women) look for soft targets.
Frankly, there is little evidence at this time which suggests that individuals arming themselves will have little to do with a downturn in campus shootings, but that may very well change when celebro-murder-junkies perceive quicker and just-as-sure ejection from the realm of the living by an increasingly armed venue. Of course, they may choose other places -- theaters, malls, office complexes -- but better studies will have to be made than the WOD-type stuff controllers are slopping out.
