The spot Leslie Stahl just did on the Arctic emphasizes how crucial the Arctic will be to the world economy in the next 5-10 years. As the ice melts, shipping channels will open, and Russia appears to be aiming to control those lanes, by military force, if necessary.
Trump doesn't believe global warming is really happening, AND he is in the pocket of Putin. Not likely to work out well for the U.S. economy should he somehow land in the Oval Office come January...

(20,584 posts)and you will see Navy documents about the buildup to protect those shipping lanes - and resources there. Greenland lays claim as well but it will be between the Russians and the US.
The military has been preparing for climate change for a long time and tRump will not change that. They have scientists too.
NW Washington is seeing an increase in Navy activity. Idaho Growlers and staff have been moved to Whidbey Island, there is increased testing of electronic surveillance and detection in the Olympic National Forest, a new pier will be built on the Strait of Juan de Fuca for navy use that includes overnight accommodations. There is probably more going on we don't know about.
It would be logical for there to be buildup in Alaska (and Canada) too.
