I can attest that seeing a hurricane headed towards you will cause belly flops.
And the aftermath of trying to cope in the midst of post storm destruction is as bad as listening to the constant roar of the winds.
Hang in there, guys, and try to let us know you are safe when you can.

(269,054 posts)They can't believe we cleared the patio - all we left are their bed and some covered cushions for them.
They are not amused.
Heard the most we'll get wind wise is 100mph. The rain will be the issue. This too will pass - thanks for all the good thoughts.
I can't remember a Cat 4 hitting three big islands in the Caribbean at almost the same time.

(269,054 posts)but rest assured with the rain that is forecast there will be severe flooding and homes will be destroyed from both flooding and landslides. The poor and vulnerable will be devastated and we can expect major infrastructural damage. Matthew is moving very slowly which is very bad news for Jamaica and Haiti
We'll start picking up the pieces by Wednesday.

(153,169 posts)when the tornado sirens are sounding, my cat is firmly entrenched behind my toilet ..... I cannot fit there with him, but it lets me know that bathroom is probably the place for me to be
malaise
(269,054 posts)but you're right - they are survivors.
Word is we won't feel the worst until much later today given the 5mph speed. Neither Jamaica nor Haiti should get a direct hit but torrential rain is coming. Eastern, Central and North eastern parishes will get the worst of it.
We had light rain overnight - none at the moment but it is very overcast and the wind is picking up.
My coffee is tasting better than ever
So far so good.

(153,169 posts)my Riff Raff is half feral, half owns me......when he was an injured stray teen cat I ordered a feral trap over the internet to catch him and spent a few hundred bucks on his injuries. I thought he'd be extremely grateful but he treated me like the wicked witch who stole me from the great outdoors. When he finally got back outside, he was gone for 17 days. I even took vacation days from work to look for him. I saw him off in the distance from my patio on a cold, miserable day and called to him, and I swear I could see the thoughts in motion - it's that crazy lady, but she DID have good food...so he returned and yup I understood the conditions - he can go outside. So for the past 11 years that's where we've been at - he can go outside, but only if I am home and awake. Yes indeed. He actually will return when I call for him (eventually).
Hope you guys will be OK; I know it is......very difficult to kick hurricane ass

(269,054 posts)Cats are something else - my lil supermarket owner was giving me a great story about the one she's looking after for close friends. She has had to go and fetch him in the nearly gully several times (and nudge him with food).

(269,054 posts)so the eye should not touch either island. Looks like a direct hit for Guantanamo Bay.
Mainland US better pay attention. Our worst effects should be tonight - we were hoping for afternoon but that stalling yesterday has held things up - now moving N at 6mph. Hope he picks up speed and gets the hell out of here. Rain will be our problem - winds should be Cat1 to Cat2.
Prepare and stay safe

Poor Haiti is taking a direct hit as I type. They can't handle this.
