Who sent the manila envelope - with page from Trump's tax return - to the NY Times?

According to the reporters of the NY TImes, it was delivered to a reporter's mailbox on Friday, September 23rd. And it had a mailing address from the Trump Tower.

If it came from the Trump Tower, it probably came from the Trump campaign? But, for what reason?

It does not appear that it was meant to enlighten anyone about Mr Trump's taxes, but rather, to deceive and to divert attention away from the issue of his tax returns?

Perhaps the campaign thought that their candidate needed to address the tax return "issue" and that this would silence his critics? They wanted everyone to know that it was all perfectly legal.

So, why would Trump threaten to sue the Times for making public his tax information from 1995? As if he had no knowledge of the "leak" to the reporters? But he has used similar tactics in the past whenever he wanted the press to print something.

To the average person, it would indicate that the Trump campaign is very worried about the tax returns "issue". They do not feel they can make it to the end of the campaign by stone-walling with excuses about "being audited" and other nonsense.

The surrogates were ready to hit all the talk shows with their explanations today. "Mr Trump is a genius", said Rudy Guiliani and Chris Christie. Really?! They seemed to have prepared for their comments.

I assume by the postal mark they know it came from NYC. I'm sure it's a limited number of people with access to these records.

The reporters from the Times visited his and his father's accountant, who is now about 80 years in age, and he verified that it was his signature on the tax form.

The man who prepared his taxes or anyone of his employees during or even after he prepared them. Since they may have had or even still have copies. Same thing for someone who worked for or maybe still works for dipshit donnie. Could be him or his campaign.

But the main thing is how it is spun and which side wins in the spin.

It can even help him. It explains why he paid zero taxes in the 2 returns that were available.

His return is 12000 pages. The IRS maintains permanent offices at the offices of some taxpayers. It isn't just because they think you are cheating. It's because there are bound to be differences of opinion over many many issues. They have to audit returns like his, honest or not honest.

where the envelope entered the US mail delivery system.

It had a NY postmark. It had a Trump organization return address. Anyone could have put it in a mailbox anywhere near Trump Tower.

have rummaged through the files.

Perhaps it was deposited here, at the closest USPS box (lower right corner) to Trump Tower, in zip 10022:

But that's a good sized zip code, almost a half mile square, with lots of possibilities:

IMHO, it would be better for the Clinton campaign or surrogates to just say "the Times received this from an anonymous source: no further comment" and let the Trump camp dig the hole itself.

Then Heard the reporter on one of the morning shows ( Sunday ) who broke the story and had papers sent to her . She went through their steps of checking papers before printing . going to copy part of an article , unless Mr Mitnick a semiretired accountant who prepared returns is in on it I do not think it was a set up

"We hired tax experts to guide us through the math. We researched the 1995 tax code. We reached out to anyone who might have viewed Mr. Trump’s records during that period.

But the breakthrough came when David traveled to Florida and tracked down Jack Mitnick, the semiretired accountant who had prepared and signed Mr. Trump’s tax returns.

Mr. Mitnick was initially reluctant to talk, but he eventually agreed to meet David in a bagel shop.

In a conversation there, Mr. Mitnick not only said the records appeared to be authentic; he also solved the mystery of the digits that did not line up. It turned out that the tax preparation software he had used did not allow him to enter a loss of nine figures. So, he recalled, he had to manually enter the first two digits, using an IBM Selectric typewriter. "
