Off course, his memory could fail about the details of it, but he did confirm that the loss
was indeed big enough to not be able to be entered by the tax software

6. The NYT reporters talked to Trump's accountant at the time and he verified the forms

On Wednesday, The Times presented the tax documents to Jack Mitnick, a lawyer and certified public accountant who handled Mr. Trump’s tax matters for more than 30 years, until 1996. Mr. Mitnick was listed as the preparer on the New Jersey tax form.

Mr. Mitnick, 80, now semiretired and living in Florida, said that while he no longer had access to Mr. Trump’s original returns, the documents appeared to be authentic copies of portions of Mr. Trump’s 1995 tax returns. Mr. Mitnick said the signature on the tax preparer line of the New Jersey tax form was his, and he readily explained an obvious anomaly in the way especially large numbers appeared on the New York tax document.

A flaw in the tax software program he used at the time prevented him from being able to print a nine-figure loss on Mr. Trump’s New York return, he said. So, for example, the loss of “-915,729,293” on Line 18 of the return printed out as “5,729,293.” As a result, Mr. Mitnick recalled, he had to use his typewriter to manually add the “-91,” thus explaining why the first two digits appeared to be in a different font and were slightly misaligned from the following seven digits.

“This is legit,” he said, stabbing a finger into the document.

And the story behind the story. I'm stupefied by posters here who seem convinced that reputable journalists are morons and, before the debate, that Hillary was going to be t-boned by trump.

This story is from the New York Times, boy the national enquirer.

Give it a fucking rest.

As I said, read the story behind the story. They explain how they received the story and the investigation they did. Your dismissal of it out of hand was pointless.

And I repeat, what is it with posters here who are convinced they know more than Hillary's campaign managers, more than reputable journalists, more than reputable economists. Sure, I get it, questioning stuff is fine. I've been questioning stuff before many of you here were born. But do you really think the NYT would receive this bombshell and publish the next day, without further investigation?

As for speculating behind where it came from, and how? Go ahead. But read TPM this morning for some thoughts on this from, yes, I'll say it again, a professional journalist.

Next a hit on how good a business man he is. Losing almost a billion dollars while Bill Clinton was in office and the economy was improving makes him more of a loser. So yes maybe a ding for those who think he is some kind of business genius. Next for someone who has used the tax system to get what is effectively what the repubs would call a entitlement. A billionaire screws up and we cover for them. He may not have been paid directly, by the government, but used it to not pay taxes since he was a dumbshit. In other words a form of bail out not having to pay in years after.
