Is it a mistake to raise expectations too high with this debate?

Everyone is saying (except the Trump supporters) that Hillary is going to mop the floor with Trump....that he will crash and burn and has zero chance of winning this debate against such an experienced candidate.

With expectations that high, if Trump even has just a decent showing, it could be considered a win for him.

To use a football analogy...if your team is favored to win by 40 points, but only wins by 7, some fans would consider that a disappointment. Even though you won, you were supposed to win by more.

I remember back in 2000, many thought Al Gore was going to mop the floor with Bush. Bush wasn't the best public speaker and many thought he wasn't that great a debater. But Al Gore ended up being a huge disappointment in those debates.

I think you run a great risk here because everyone has driven Trump's chances so far down that many people are going to overlook minor mistakes and cut him some slack. Hillary on the other hand will expect to be absolutely perfect.

long enough to demonstrate at least a passing acquaintanceship with a few facts here and there. That and not stomping on his tongue or shitting his drawers will get him declared the winner.

The stunt with Bill Clinton's ex mistress of 25 years ago leads me to believe this won't happen, that his whole aim is going to be to try to make Clinton cry. It's not going to work. If being grilled by hostile idiots in Congress for 10 hours didn't do it, he hasn't got a chance.

No worries. She's got this. She has 40 years in politics. He's had none. She's golden.

I'm thinking positive and good thoughts for Hillary, watching her debate performance alone and will support her no matter how things turn out on Monday.

Meanwhile, I have friends who are spending money on parties/get together's, friends who are buying food/drinks and one set of friends (Married couple) who are catering an event and inviting 10 or so friends over (I was invited, but they understood when I told them I'd rather watch alone). Most friends are saying that Hillary will finally get her chance to "Destroy that criminal tRump in front of the world" "clean his clock" "mop the floor with him" and "Embarrass that cheap, orange spray tan right off his face," and if this WERE a "normal" debate vs a another "normal" person, then I'd pretty much know for sure that Hillary would be good to go. I'm one for confidence, one for thinking positively. But if it's one thing I've learned during this particular election cycle is that the so-called "Liberal media" have been anything but liberal or even-handed, and in MANY instances as you and many have said, most in the MSM have given tRump tons of free air time and also have gone soft ON him and have given scant coverage of various allegations of wrong-doing, lies, and who he's chosen to associate himself with etc.

Hillary's been covered more negatively, had more "crap" flung her way than ANY other candidate this election cycle. Nothing's changed over 30 years of the so-called "Liberal Media" & right-wingers being "out to mostly get her." And over time, expectations of his performance for the 1st debate have been lowered even lower than that of even Dubya's first debate vs Kerry. tRump's mediocrity and less than "averageness" will be rewarded in some form or fashion. Hillary will be ready wit facts, data, truths, be knowledgeable, as she's prepared for this very important 1st debate, which will be the highest debate in history if not one of the most watched TV shows of all-time (Roots included), and while I know that water is wet, you'll have people like Mrs. Greenspan and others like her more than likely take huge chunks out of an extremely competent/intelligent/well-spoken Hillary's hide should she speak directly to tRump forcefully and not cower, or fact-check him--NOT allow him to get away with his usual lies/BS. Holt won't be much help I feel, probably turn into a tanned Matt Lauer (PLEASE prove me WRONG Holt). Only lately have SOME in the media gone after tRump, and that was only after he "Rick-Rolled" them a week ago this past Friday, calling for a news conference to discuss birther allegations. Instead he ended up promoting his newest hotel and when he spoke of birtherism he blamed Hillary for it. Lies, Lies and more damned LIES. Yep, the media Rick-Rolled for the millionth time this election cycle and before by tRump. At least we heard something positive that could be beneficial to Hillary: They'll be no clapping, noise making etc. allowed, and hopefully audience members will abide by that rule for 90 minutes.

Well, the first debate has arrived and we know that tRamp will more than likely be Gish-Galloping, talking gibberish and eluding every question asked of him @ the debate. And late today, we learned that like twin-soul P.T. Barnum, he'll "allegedly" be inviting "special guest" Gennifer Flowers to what he would love to turn into a modern day freak show. I'm sure Mrs. Greenspan and her ilk are sitting somewhere smiling with glee over this latest Gennifer Flowers development should if true. Hillary won't allow this Flowers invite to phase her IMHO. She'll be the adult and smartest and most knowledgeable ONE on that debate stage.
