Weird: Just got an automated call on my work phone that a major water main break will cause

the local community to run out of water "some time this afternoon."

I immediately hopped on the internet, but I cannot find any information about a water break.

The call did not say what agency was calling.

Is this some kind of bizarre hoax?

And if so, how do the guilty profit from it?

Said the call was probably "bogus" (her word).

So, who benefits from that?

Just kidding, maybe it was a private eye trying to see if you are home. We make weird "pretext" (lies) calls quite often and can fake out caller ID.

Are you up to no good? Kidding.

Maybe it's the hubby wanting to make sure that when I say I'm going in to work on the weekend, I'm really going in?

But, that doesn't make any sense, because he calls my office phone all the time and I answer, so I really don't think he's suspicious of me.

I have a good friend who was a PI in the 70s and early 80s.
He quit that line of work because he needed a more steady stream of income.
He's retired now (quite a bit older than me).

But, he's full of interesting stories about his 15 or so year career.
He says he wishes the internet existed when he was working.
Would have made his life much easier.
And, the vast majority of his work was infidelity cases, before no-fault divorce laws came into effect.

Now we do more child custody cases where we try to prove that one parent isn't fit to get the kids.

(That's what I'm doing this very minute)

We still do some infidelity work, for prenups and peace of mind.

And when the line is fixed they call back and tell us to run the tap until clear.

(We had numerous contractors in the area that broke water mains this summer)
