Video Supports 'The Version of the Truth That We Gave'-at link
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney says he will not release video taken while a police officer shot and killed 43-year old Keith Lamont Scott, a Black man and father of four. Police maintain Scott had a gun which they claim posed an imminent threat to officers, while Scott's family insists he did not have a gun, but was holding a book.
Chief Putney, speaking Thursday morning at a press conference, also said he will allow Scott's family to view video, but has no obligation to release it to the public. He admitted the video does not show Scott pointing a gun at officers.
"The video does not give me absolute video evidence that a person is pointing a gun," Putney said, but added that in context with other evidence it supports "the version of the truth that we gave."
"It's not clear what the body cameras worn by three officers who were present during the shooting may have captured," the AP adds.

(44,974 posts)At least on video that they have. If republicans don't want people to open carry, they should stop passing open carry laws.

(12,682 posts)Just conjecture, but if he had a gun and wasn't pointing it, there's a good chance he didn't even have it in his hand.
I wonder what the video actually shows? Was he acting like the police had told him to raise his hands, or like the police told him to drop his gun - or were they yelling conflicting orders to him?
Y'know, it's a stupid move to tell someone to drop a gun if s/he's not actually holding it - unless you feel like you want to shoot someone that day.

On the other hand, books can be extremely dangerous, depending on the content.

(12,682 posts)The first volume of the Autobiography of Mark Twain can cause permanent brain damage if thrown with the natural reactionary force to a certain JF Cooper book...
(literary bragging points to anyone who gets the reference...)

(21,506 posts)If you wanted to appear to be hiding the truth I am not sure you could do any more to paint that picture.
Way past time for transparency in the police department to be mandatory.

(9,474 posts)Truth is truth. There is only one true version, imo. This reeks of cover up.
NC is an open carry state. "IF" Mr. Scott did have a gun and a permit to carry and he didn't threaten LEOs (other than the fact that he was a black man), then why is he dead?
I believe the only way the violence is going to stop is when the video is released. I hope no one else is injured or killed, but I can certainly understand the anger and frustration of the citizens.
