Missouri's Senate ad themes: Blunt the Washington insider, Kander the Clinton ally

"The air war is on in Missouri’s U.S. Senate election.

Republican Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., and Democratic challenger Jason Kander both have been up with multiple tough new television ads in the past week. In them, Kander accuses Blunt of being an entrenched Washingtonian, while Blunt accuses Kander of being a Hillary Clinton compatriot.

The senatorial campaign arms of both national parties have gotten in on the act, to the tune of almost $4 million so far — evidence of the race’s prominent place in the national battle by Republicans to keep the Senate, and by Democrats to take it.

“Washington is working great for Roy Blunt,” says the narrator in a new ad by the national Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, over an image of champagne being poured. “But how is it working out for you?”

A Blunt campaign commercial last week shows Kander at a Clinton rally, as the narrator warns: “Kander is national co-chair for Hillary Clinton. He’d vote for her liberal judges … Missouri can’t risk Clinton/Kander.”

The reason for the spike in intensity in both sides’ ad campaigns isn’t difficult to figure out. Blunt has led in most polls, but Kander has been narrowing that gap. The RealClearPolitics polling average currently ranks the race a “toss-up."
