Kellogg Recall of Eggo Waffle Batch Is the Latest of Listeria Concerns

Which Waffles Have Been Recalled?

The Kellogg Co. has voluntarily recalled 10,000 cases of Kellogg Eggo Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat waffles, according to a company statement released yesterday. The recall affects products that were distributed in 25 states. The individual boxes of 10 waffles have the UPC Code 38000 40370 and a best-if-used-by date of Nov. 21, 2017, or Nov. 22, 2017.

During routine testing, Kellogg found a problem with its cleaning process, which left an opening for Listeria monocytogenes bacteria to possibly contaminate this batch of Eggo waffles. There have been no reported illnesses related to the recalled Eggo waffles, according to the company statement.

"The recall is a result of tests, which identified the potential for contamination and a gap in our sanitation process. As soon as we learned of a potential concern, we moved quickly to identify any foods that might be impacted and resolve the issue, " a spokesman for the Kellogg Co. said in a statement sent to ABC News. "This includes initiating a recall, halting production on the line in question, conducting a deep sanitary clean of the area and reviewing our cleaning and sanitation protocols with the relevant plant employees."

Bill Marler, an attorney who specializes in foodborne illness, said the news was actually a good sign about the state of the food industry.

"Companies should be encouraged to test and should [receive] a pat on the back for testing and recalling the product," he said. "That's the system working properly."

But why does anyone buy these things? I have an affluent good friend with 2 kids that uses them and she is a stay at home mom! I mean with some bisquik and a pan or waffle maker you can make your own waffles or pancakes in, what, an extra 5 minutes. Hell, I do not allow bisquik into the house and can whip up a simple batter in less than 5 minutes...Flour, baking soda, salt, butter, milk(buttermilk in my house) and perhaps sugar. Maybe molasses.

Or even easier, fried eggs and toast. 2 eggs and toast cost what, 70 cents? My mother came up dirt poor and there is no way her mother would feed her shit like Eggos.

When did so many Americans forget how to cook?

And don't tell me it is because they are poor and do not have them time. Cooking simple, healthy meals at home is always cheaper than eating out. And often faster. I have lots of immigrants working for me and the sure as hell are not eating eggos.

I personally think our schools got rid of Home Economics because it hurt the bottom line of large corporations.

And full disclosure, I am a middle age man who was taught that cooking is NOT the duty of the wife.

My kids liked them because they could make them without my help when they wanted a snack. Pop a couple in the toaster, spread some peanut butter and apples on a whole-wheat waffle and it's is a good snack.

I don't have kids. Did not work out for us.

But I hope you taught, or will teach your kids how to cook pancakes and waffles. Because it is not hard and is so much better than frozen things. Cooking is a life skill all people should have. And I can attest that a man that can and likes cooking is a bonus for the ladies! When my, at the time, girlfriend realized that I wanted to do all the cooking it did not hurt the relationship! Not saying that is the reason we have been together for 30 years, but it helped.

I guess I am lucky that my parents made me grow fast...in some ways. They felt that a 10 year old was perfectly capable of frying eggs in butter and cooking bacon. And I loved.

It is late. Have a nice evening.

because they like them and sometimes they hit the spot. I eat them while on vacation at the beach. I know how to make pancakes and waffles, but sometimes it is way easier to pop some in the toaster before some early morning shell hunting. No having the ingredients, no cleaning up pots and pans and appliances. Being a 100% food purist just takes a lot of time and energy and someone who wants to spend a lot of time cooking. That would not be me. I'm about a 60% food purist. To each his own.

If I were to eat it, today, it would be because I have bad back problems and keep premade food in the house for days I may not eat if I had to actually cook. The same reason I buy disposable plates and utensils.

I'll do something fast and easy on a weekday morning like toast and eggs. But not waffles. It isn't just an extra 5 minutes. Eggo waffle: Open the box, put it in the toaster. Push a button. Done. Home made: Fish out the waffle maker and clean it, then plug it in to pre heat it. Already, we are past the time it took to make the eggo waffle. Get all the ingredients together, measure and mix them. Make and serve the eggo waffles. Then clean up the mess and all the dishes. Clean the waffle maker and put it away. Clean up took longer than making the eggo waffles.

A lot more pressures on our time than there used to be. Something messy and gadgety like waffles are a weekend treat. That's just the way it is.

Waffles are indeed a pain. We have started making a ton of them when I make the then throwing them in the freezer.

But 2 fried eggs and toast is very quick.

I understand convience food, but lament how we normally just reach for processed food. FDR, or actually Eleanor really believed in teaching home ec and people how to cook affordable and nutritional meals. I still think there is value in that.

Processed food is just bad for us.

And I agree about the need for convenience food. Homemade is so much better.

I'm talking when they were 8 or 9.

But in high school, my son asked for a belgian waffle maker for his birthday. Waffles had a whole new meaning after that!

There are plenty of convenience foods that aren't cheap or better tasting (like pizza bagels) and I think most people outgrow them as they get older.
