If you love butterflies, you need asters in your autumn garden.

Aster blossoms come in shades of blue, lavender, pink, purple and white, and they serve up heaping portions of nectar to fuel those beautiful winged creatures.

There are asters for almost any garden conditions, sun or shade, dry or wet soil, sand or clay. Many are Midwest natives.

If you’re wary of asters because you’ve grown tall ones that flop all over neighboring plants, don’t worry. There are two ways to enjoy the autumn show without the flop: plant short varieties, or cut back tall ones by about half in mid-spring.
