So the latest bombing lunatic is a member of a family from Afghanistan

who are pissed off that the neighborhood objects to the late opening and loud noises from the friend chicken restaurant? The city enforced the ordinances on them? Is that what I heard from Richard Engel??

after an earlier closing time was enforced due to neighbor complaints about loud noise late at night, probably from drunks after the bars closed.

That probably has little to do with why this jerk decided to blow up New Jersey (with a short trip to Manhattan). Chances are he fits the profile of a socially awkward weirdo with consistently problematic relationships with women--or no relationships since we can usually spot horny guys who hate us.

I'm just grateful that he wasn't a terribly competent bomber.

It seemed more like a temper tantrum by someone who had just enough knowledge that it would piss people off, but not enough together to actually plan something out.
Sort of like a rash of aimless boys dropping pipe bombs in trash-cans at high school. That happened at my high school when I was a sophomore; two boys who were failing out didn't think it was fair they were in trouble...blew up the boy's room in the Gym and the kitchen area of the Cafeteria.
Sad, because that was one of the few real High School kitchens (circa 1940) in town, where the Home Ec. class had cooking/baking classes and the school cooks could actually prepared all sorts of meals properly, instead of depending on delivered pre-cooked contracted meals that just needed to be warmed before serving. They never repaired the kitchen...

His family, extended family, his friends and their families. The people who have these ideas and inclinations have a point of view that is a result of a history and an existence that we can't possibly fully comprehend without a lot more information. I wonder what they would say if someone were to hear them out without threat?

Instead of considering it, we go for a sensationalistic story and dehumanize the actors. An MO that rewards the media with viewership, benefits the MIC with public support, and benefits the terrorists by confirming the recruitment narrative. There are obviously no simple answers, but what we are doing doesn't seem to be working.

You mean take the Taliban out of power?

Or:
In 2001 no girls attended formal schools and there were only one million boys enrolled. By 2012 the World Bank says there were 7.8 million pupils attending school - including about 2.9 million girls.

Life-expectancy had increased from 45 years in 2001 to 63 years.

According to the UN, access to safe drinking water improved from 4.8% of the population to 60.6% by 2011.

Stuff like that, how horrible!

There are those who do not think you can be a good 'progressive' and support any overseas military activity. And they get into contest burnishing their 'progressive' creds seeing who can trash the US the most.

Afghanistan was a just effort. They did indeed assist, support and empower those who caused 9-11. They refused to turn them over. Under International law that is a valid reason to declare war. Everyone supported the effort.

But because Bush went full right wing idiot and then talked the Nation into invading Iraq, anything he led is seen as deplorable. Had even 25% of the resources that went into Iraq gone into Afghanistan, it would probably entering a nice period right now. Things seemed to be on a upswing, with nations in the area supporting us. Even Iran was not causing problems. When Iraq happened it all went out the window.

And now I fear we will leave the Afghans right were they were 17 years ago.

What's more what is sometimes viewed as 'otherization' my not be - like enforcing ordinances or shutting down a dirty restaurant - happens all the time to restaurants local and foreign owned.

On the other hand I have loads of documentaries showing me how Muslims have been treated since 9/11.

It's a fugging mess.

I'm curious about which Afghans were allowed to come to the US in the mid-90s. I'd love a breakdown on their backgrounds. The US has had a history of welcoming right wingers certainly from our hemisphere.

Ahmad Rahami: Fixture in Family’s Business and, Lately, a ‘Completely Different Person’

'He presided behind the counter of a storefront New Jersey fried chicken restaurant, making his home with his family in an apartment above it. To some of his friends, Ahmad Khan Rahami was known as Mad, an abridgment of his name rather than a suggestion of his manner, and they liked the fact that he gave them free food when they were short on money.

Other than that, his other known obsession was souped-up Honda Civics that he liked to race. In recent years, though, some friends noticed a marked change in his personality and religious devotion after what they believe was a visit to Afghanistan, where he was born.'>>>

Except that the neighbor's witnesses do not attribute the perpetrator's being "pissed off" to business or neighborhood matters, but to a recent adherence to fundamentalist religiosity.
