Most of her strongest supporters have either worked for her or done business with him, he quipped.

(11,991 posts)I mean, it's hard to define "strongest" supporters. (Biggest donors? Powerful endorsers like government officials and celebrities? People in her family?) But however you define it, I doubt more than 50% worked for her or done business with him. It's fine as rhetorical hyperbole, people will get it, but no, I kinda doubt there is any way to consider it literally true.

(11,991 posts)I like the quote, I think it is effective, and communicates something that is valid in its character. But it does not take excessive parsing to understand that it is rhetorical hyperbole and not technically true.
"Most {that is, more than 50%} of her strongest supporters {define it however you'd like} have either worked for her or done business with him"
is just not going to be a literally true statement.
He is speaking figuratively, and that's fine. But it's about as true as someone saying "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse." Unlikely. It's fine, it communicates something effectively, but just don't claim it's literal truth, that's silly.

You are narrowing the meaning to suit a narrative. Additionally, you fail to provide objective evident to support your premise.
"rhetorical hyperbole..."
If and only if anything other than absolute literalism is hyperbole... meaning both metaphor and analogy would then be hyperbole as well, which is simply not true.
Though it may be fun to affect the pretense of a grammarian, unless one actually is, we more often than advertise our dramatic lack of knowledge than how clever we want to be perceived. That's silly, part II.

(11,991 posts)Every day is the same. Trump shows himself to be an ass. Rinse and repeat. It's Groundhog Day.
As for why the person who wrote post #4 wanted to muddy the waters about what is true, I don't know. I merely tried to un-muddy.

(11,991 posts)My quibble was only with Stuart who said that it was even true. Well, literally, no it's not. But it's fine.
Your response implies you think metaphors are literally true, but pretty much by definition, they are not.
(Unless maybe you're stretching the meaning of the word "true," beyond linguistics and into philosophy...)

(15,552 posts)You strike me as one of those people who think your job is to read posts and "school" the rest of us on how to write perfect posts on a discussion forum. Good lord, we're not writing legal briefs here. Give it a rest.
You must be a really fun person to be around.

That said, any big "game changing" comments - maybe Bill Clinton's above, or Trump's new birther moment last night - won't show up in the polls for several days to a week.

(32,623 posts)He nailed me on my remaining bigotry. It's not quite as simplistic as being against those who disagree with me. It's not being able to relate to someone who falls for Trump's con, or the repub con in general.
It was good for me to be reminded that some of the the demo in Trump's camp are vets and good neighbors, barring politics. It's just that politics is so big now, even the "good" among them seem to have their teeth bared towards "the other" and any progress at all.
Bill teaches when he speaks. I didn't realize that for the first time, addiction is more rampant in rural/suburban areas.
My favorite of Trevor's remarks about Trump was whether you want to be for someone against logic or ideas.

It was the silliest crap I have ever heard- stupid and juvenile, especially the denture thing. Someone with his money would have implants, not a plate like me (saving up for implants)
